Celebrating the Teachers Who Shape Us

Think of a teacher you still remember, and chances are you can recall something they said to you. Perhaps they encouraged you to try again after a disappointing result, noticed a strength you had overlooked or trusted you to lead when you would never have volunteered. Something that felt ordinary to them may have stayed with you for years, shaping how you approached challenges and what you believed you could achieve.

On this World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate the teachers at Pearl of Africa International Primary School with that lasting influence in mind. Each school day brings opportunities for them to help a child understand, gain confidence or make a better decision. Over time, these experiences become part of how children see themselves and relate to the people around them.

Much of this work begins before a lesson starts. Teachers prepare activities, choose examples and consider where learners might need more explanation. Afterwards, they review children’s work and use what they find to plan the next steps. A misunderstanding in an exercise book can prompt a fresh approach the following morning, while an unexpected question can open up a discussion worth exploring.

In the classroom, those plans meet children with different abilities, interests and personalities. Some are eager to speak, while others need encouragement to share an idea. A learner may understand a topic quickly and struggle with the next one. Teachers make decisions throughout a lesson about when to explain further, offer a challenge or give a child time to work something out. Doing this well takes knowledge, patience and close attention.

That attention matters because asking for help can feel difficult for a child. Admitting confusion, reading aloud or attempting an unfamiliar task can leave a learner feeling exposed. A teacher’s response helps establish whether the child feels comfortable trying again. Being listened to and guided respectfully can make the next attempt a little easier.

Teachers also share in the everyday work of helping children grow alongside others. They guide conversations after disagreements, explain why a choice was unfair and help learners take responsibility for their actions. Through these encounters, children practise listening, cooperation and consideration. The guidance often needs repeating as they learn how to manage frustration and understand another person’s point of view.

There is joy in seeing that effort take hold. A learner begins a task they previously avoided, contributes to a discussion or shows greater care towards a classmate. Teachers recognise what these moments mean because they remember where the child began. Their encouragement acknowledges the work it took to get there and gives the learner a reason to keep going.

At Pearl of Africa International Primary School, we honour our teachers for the responsibility they carry through all these experiences. Families place considerable trust in the people who teach their children, and we recognise the care involved in earning and sustaining that trust. It is reflected in thoughtful feedback, conversations with parents and the daily effort to understand what will help a learner progress.

Their contribution deserves recognition, along with the support that allows them to do their work well. As a school community, we can show our appreciation by listening to their perspectives, respecting their professional judgement and keeping communication between home and school open.

To our teachers, thank you for the thought you put into your lessons and the care you bring to your classrooms. Thank you for guiding children through difficult moments, recognising their progress and sharing in their excitement when something finally makes sense.

Years from now, a former learner may remember your encouragement at a moment when they need it most. That lasting influence is part of what we celebrate today.
